The origins of baptism goes back to Jesus. In his dialogue with Nicodemus Jesus said “ No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and the Holy Spirit. (Jn 3:5). Baptism is necessary for salvation. Right before his ascension he called His disciples and told them, go therefore and make disciples of all the nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Mt: 26.

After the ascension of Christ the disciples traveled to different parts of the world preaching, baptizing and establishing Christian communities. When someone received baptism he became a member of the newly formed Christian community. This tradition still continues today. By our baptism we become members of Church, the Body of Christ, the local parish and the universal Catholic Church.  Catholics are required  to follow the teachings of Jesus, the teachings of the Church and to be aware of the responsibilities baptism bring.
